This hotel offers twin rooms with fan and share bathroom at a price of $18 a night and a double with fan and private ensuite for $22 a night (prices from April 2013). Both include breakfast of fruit, eggs on toast ( with an option of fried / scrambled or an omelette) and of course tea or coffee.
The location is ideal as the hotel itself offers 2 small balconies from which in the morning you can watch the locals deliver by boat the fruit, vegetables and fish for that days’ market and also the sunset.
The Main Street of the village is a very short walk away, where you can find local foods of Shan Noodles (from 400kyat), street samosas and many other options all the way up to expensive restaurant meals and western food.
Prices for accommodation in Burma have increased greatly over the past few years. For Inle Lake Guest houses we found that few double rooms are available for under $18 in Nyuang Shwe (April 2013) – and prices are often double those listed in the lonely planet guide of 2011/12. Also, note the entry fee to the Inle Lake area itself is now $10 (2014), not the $3 listed in Lonely planet.
Cleanliness and quality are similar for all guest houses in this price range, however it can be difficult if you don’t book in advance to find a double room that is actually a double and not a twin.
We liked the Joy hotel especially because our large double room was downstairs and didn’t get any sun during the day – hence it stayed cool. The staff were also very helpful and their English was ok.

Expect all prices to increase from October 2013 onwards – probably by about $3 – $10 for the 2014 season.
Prices in Lonely Planet 2011/12 were so out of date that we felt prompted to write our own travel guide:
Inle Lake Guest House: Other Budget Double room Options in Nyaung Shwe
4 Sisters – twin room that can push beds together $ 20 with breakfast (bit far out of town)
Aquarius – $25 with bfast cheaper rooms of $18 are available but book early to get these rooms- nice looking garden area to mingle
Queen inn – $25 twin but we were offered the triple with double and a single bed for same price and bfast. Wifi available but not included in the price. Nice water front location, the rooms farthest from the canal were $25 the closer to the canal you are the higher the rate.
Gypsy – $25 dbl room. Cheap single rooms are available though, apparently. Remember Inn – $20 dbl with breakfast (quite a popular option many people we met during our visit were staying here)
In general we thought Inle Lake was overrated. Read more on that in our
“The Disappointing Truth about Inle Lake“.
